The Diploma of Project Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to run projects rather than just work on them. You study how projects get scoped, planned, budgeted, scheduled and delivered, and how to keep stakeholders informed when things shift. Expect units on managing scope, time, cost, quality, risk, human resources and procurement, plus the communication and leadership skills that hold a project team together. Assessment is typically a mix of assignments, case studies and practical project work rather than exams alone.
As a diploma, this sits at the vocational end of the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is shorter and more hands-on than a bachelor degree, and it is built around units of competency with set credit points. Most students complete it over two semesters, though some providers offer trimester intakes so you can start at more than one point in the year. There is no honours year and no research thesis at this level, the focus is applied skills you can use on a job site or in an office from week one. Some providers build in a work placement or a simulated project where you take a project from brief to close-out.
You learn to write a project charter, build a work breakdown structure, estimate and control a budget, manage a risk register, and report progress to a sponsor. You also practise the softer side: negotiating with suppliers, resolving conflict in a team, and keeping a schedule honest when a milestone slips. Group work is common, which mirrors how project teams actually operate. By the end you should be able to pick up a small to medium project and run it without supervision.
This suits people already working in a trade, an office, construction, IT or events who keep getting handed project work and want formal recognition. It also suits school leavers who want a fast, practical entry into project support roles, and international students looking for a shorter Australian qualification. If you are an international student, note that the Student visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 or an accepted equivalent, with the Department of Home Affairs setting its own separate threshold for the visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 111790H. Check the official page for current unit lists, intakes and fees.
Australian industries that hire diploma-level project staff include construction and civil engineering, information technology, health and aged care administration, government and defence, mining and resources, and events and hospitality. The qualification also stacks towards further study, with credit typically granted into a bachelor degree in project management or business.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$10,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
