The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and it is built around the practical side of community work: intake and assessment, case management, group work, advocacy, and referring people to the services they need. You study how to support people through housing stress, family breakdown, mental health challenges, disability, settlement, and other situations where a skilled worker makes a difference. The course also covers the legal and ethical side of the job, duty of care, confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and working within the boundaries of your role.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over two years full time, split into semesters or trimesters. Each semester you enrol in a set of units of study, and each unit carries credit points. You need to pass all the required units and accumulate the required credit points to graduate. The course mixes classroom or online theory with practical assessment, and most diploma programmes in this field include a supervised work placement, often called vocational placement, where you spend time in a community organisation under the guidance of a qualified supervisor. Placement is where you practise case notes, client interviews, group activities and referral processes with real clients, and it is a required part of the qualification. Some providers offer a capstone unit or project in the final stage that pulls together everything you have learned. Confirm the exact unit list, placement hours and delivery mode on the official page.
You learn to conduct client assessments, develop and review case plans, work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, respond to critical situations, and maintain accurate records. You also learn to work within the Australian community services system, how to liaise with government agencies, non-government organisations and other professionals, and how to advocate for clients who are dealing with courts, housing authorities or health services. Communication skills get a lot of attention: listening, interviewing, de-escalation, and writing reports that stand up to scrutiny. By the end, you should be able to manage a caseload with supervision and know when to escalate a situation.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in community services without committing to a full degree, or who already work in the sector and want a recognised qualification. It also suits career changers, mature-age students, people with lived experience of the service system, and those who have volunteered in community organisations. If you plan to study in Australia on a Student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available if you meet the requirements, which include an Australian study requirement and the English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. The Department also sets its own English requirement for the visa, separate from the provider's admission requirement. International applicants generally need IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this level of study, though social work and community services courses sometimes ask for higher. Check the official page for the exact entry requirements, English equivalents accepted, tuition and intake dates.
Employers in Australia include state and territory government departments, local councils, not-for-profit community organisations, charities, and private providers of disability and aged care services. Community services is a large employing sector, and demand for qualified workers is steady across metropolitan and regional areas. Some roles require a police check, a Working with Children Check, or both. Confirm licensing or registration requirements with the relevant state or territory body before you apply for jobs.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$36,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
