The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to lead teams, run projects and take responsibility for how a business operates. You study how organisations plan, how budgets and financial plans are set and monitored, how risk is managed, how people are recruited, developed and performance-managed, and how continuous improvement actually gets done rather than just talked about. Assessment is practical: you work through scenarios, case studies and workplace-based tasks, and you build a portfolio of evidence showing you can apply the skills, not just describe them.
The qualification sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is delivered as a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, usually across two semesters or three trimesters depending on the intake calendar. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, many providers build in a capstone-style project where you pull the units together and solve a workplace problem end to end, and some offer a work placement or workplace-based assessment component, since the field expects you to demonstrate leadership in a real setting.
Skills you come away with include leading and managing team effectiveness, developing and using emotional intelligence, managing operational plans, overseeing financial and budget plans, managing risk, facilitating continuous improvement, and managing recruitment and performance. You also practise the communication side of leadership: negotiating, influencing, presenting to groups and handling difficult conversations. These are the things employers notice in the first few months on the job.
Who it suits: early-career staff stepping into a first supervisory role, team leaders and coordinators who want formal recognition of what they already do, small business owners and managers who need to get better at planning and finance, and international students looking for a short, practical Australian qualification. International applicants need to meet the English requirement published for the course, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, and while you study, the visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is the usual pathway for eligible graduates. Confirm entry requirements, unit structure, intake dates and tuition on the official CRICOS register entry and with the provider before you apply.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$8,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
