The Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a two-year qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil projects, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining structures, concrete and steel elements, rather than on the tools. You learn to produce drawings and documentation that construction teams actually build from, and to check that what is drawn meets the relevant standards and project brief.
Civil construction design sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it is practical and job-focused rather than academic. Delivery is usually split into semesters or trimesters, with each unit of study carrying a set number of credit points. You accumulate those credit points unit by unit until you have completed the qualification. Assessment is typically competency-based: you either demonstrate the skill or you don't, and you get another go if you don't.
Expect to spend a lot of time in CAD and BIM software, producing 2D and 3D models, site plans, sections and detail drawings. You will also cover estimating and costing, structural principles, soil and materials behaviour, and how to read and apply Australian Standards to your work. Many programmes build in a capstone or major project in the later stages, where you take a design brief from concept through to a full set of documentation. Some providers arrange work-integrated learning or a placement with an engineering or drafting firm, which is where you find out how a real project office runs.
This course suits school leavers who like technical drawing and problem solving, tradespeople moving off site into design and documentation, and career changers with an eye for detail. It also works as a pathway, graduates often use it to enter a bachelor degree in civil engineering with credit for prior study. International students should note that the Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and that the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available once you finish, depending on your circumstances. English entry is generally IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, though the Department of Home Affairs sets its own separate English threshold for the visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 114224C. Confirm all entry requirements, unit structure and fees on the official page before you apply.
Typical employers include civil engineering consultancies, local councils, road and transport authorities, land developers, and construction contractors working on infrastructure, subdivisions and commercial projects across Australia.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
