The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You will study how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run group work, advocate for people dealing with housing, income, family or health issues, and keep case notes that stand up to scrutiny. Expect units on case management, counselling skills, legal and ethical requirements, working with diversity, and responding to clients in crisis. Assessment is mostly practical: role plays, simulated client interviews, written case plans and a supervised placement in a community organisation such as a neighbourhood centre, family support service or homelessness agency.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one runs over two years, usually split into four study periods across two academic years, with intakes at the start of each semester or trimester. You complete a set of core units plus electives, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass every required unit to graduate. The course includes a work placement component, because community services is a field where you cannot learn the job from a textbook. Your placement hours are arranged with a host organisation and supervised by a qualified worker, and it is common for students to be offered casual or part-time work by their placement provider.
You will practise intake and assessment interviews, develop support plans with clients rather than for them, and learn how to refer people to the right service when the issue is outside your scope. Legal and ethical units cover duty of care, confidentiality, mandatory reporting and the boundaries of your role. You will also learn to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse clients, and people living with disability or mental health conditions. Group facilitation, record keeping, workplace safety and self-care are woven through the units, because burnout is a real risk in this sector.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a practical entry into the community sector, mature-age students changing careers, and support workers already employed in the field who want a formal qualification. It is also a pathway to a bachelor degree in social work, community development or human services, with credit for the units you have completed. International students should check the CRICOS register for tuition and confirm English requirements with the college, since the Student visa has its own separate English threshold. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Always confirm the current rules on the official pages.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
