The Advanced Diploma of Program Management is a one-year qualification for people who already manage projects and want to step up to managing a group of them. You learn how to align multiple projects with an organisation's strategic goals, balance resources across competing demands, and report to executives and steering committees. The course covers program governance, benefits realisation, stakeholder engagement, financial management and risk across a whole program rather than a single project.
Australian vocational qualifications at this level are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. Most providers deliver them over two or three study periods a year, with a mix of classroom or online study and assessment tasks drawn from real workplaces. Some offer a capstone unit where you develop a program management plan for an actual organisation. Work-integrated learning is common in this field: many students complete assessments based on their current employer, and some providers arrange placements with businesses or government agencies.
You finish with skills in program scheduling, budget control, procurement, quality assurance and leading project managers. The qualification sits on the Australian Qualifications Framework at the advanced diploma level, below a bachelor degree. If you later want a degree, many Australian universities give credit for completed units, which shortens the bachelor programme.
This course suits project managers with a few years' experience, team leaders moving into program roles, and people in government, construction, IT or health services who coordinate several projects at once. International students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Check the official CRICOS page and the provider's website for English requirements, intake dates and tuition.
