This Advanced Diploma of Conservation and Ecosystem Management is a one-year qualification delivered by the Australian College of Business Intelligence. It sits at the diploma level in the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree but above a certificate IV, and it is built for people who want to work on the ground in land management, conservation and ecosystem repair rather than follow a longer academic route.
The course covers the practical side of looking after country: surveying and monitoring ecosystems, identifying plants and animals, controlling weeds and pests, managing soils and waterways, planning and carrying out revegetation works, and understanding the legal and planning rules that apply to land in Australia. You learn how to collect field data, use maps and GPS, write management plans, and work safely outdoors. Assessment is largely competency-based, so you prove you can do the task, not just describe it.
Because it is an AQF qualification, it is made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. A one-year advanced diploma is normally two semesters or trimesters of full-time study, and some providers let you spread it over a longer period part-time. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, expect a substantial practical project or work placement in a real conservation setting, such as a national park, local council bushcare team, Landcare group, catchment authority or private environmental consultancy.
You finish with the ability to assess the condition of a patch of bush or a wetland, work out what is threatening it, and put together a plan to fix it. You can supervise a small crew, keep records, apply for permits, and talk to landholders, volunteers and government officers. Employers value the field skills: chainsaw and chemical handling tickets, four-wheel driving, first aid, and the confidence to work in remote areas.
This suits school leavers who want a fast route into environmental work, people already volunteering with a bushcare or Landcare group who want paid work, and career changers from farming, horticulture or outdoor education. It also articulates into bachelor degrees in environmental science or conservation biology at some Australian universities, usually with credit for the units you have completed. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm all details, including intake dates and unit structure, on the official page.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
