The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a two-year qualification for people who want to lead learning and development inside organisations. It sits at graduate diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, so it assumes you already hold a bachelor degree or equivalent experience. The course focuses on the management side of learning: how to design programs that change what people can actually do at work, how to assess whether training worked, and how to run a learning function with a budget and a strategy behind it.
You will work through units of study that cover adult learning theory, instructional design, assessment and evaluation, and the management of training and development. Expect to look at how organisations identify skill gaps, how they build learning into performance management, and how they measure return on training investment. Because this is a graduate diploma rather than a research degree, the emphasis is on applied practice. You will write reports, design learning materials, and present plans to a group, rather than complete a thesis.
Australian graduate diplomas are typically made up of units of study, each worth a set number of credit points. At this level, a full-time load is usually four units per semester, with two semesters in a year. Some institutions run trimesters instead, which can let you finish faster or spread your load. The exact unit list, credit point values, and whether there is a capstone project or a work placement will vary between providers. You should check the official course page for the current structure before you apply.
By the end, you should be able to audit an organisation's learning needs, design a program that addresses them, and defend your choices with evidence. You will also pick up the management skills that sit around learning: stakeholder communication, budgeting, compliance with Australian vocational and higher education standards, and the use of learning management systems. If you are already working in HR, training, or education, these are the skills that move you from delivering training to managing it.
This course suits people who have some work experience and want a formal qualification in learning management without committing to a full master's. It also suits trainers and assessors who want to step into a leadership role, and managers who have been given responsibility for staff development and want a structured grounding in it. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. English proficiency is required for admission; check the official page for the score your provider accepts.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
