The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle-management roles, or who already hold one and want the paperwork to prove it. You study how organisations run: planning and managing projects, leading and motivating a team, managing budgets and financial plans, building business relationships, and handling workplace problems before they become formal complaints. Assessment is practical. Instead of sitting exams on theory, you usually work through case studies, role plays, simulated workplace scenarios and written reports that mirror what a supervisor actually does on a Monday morning.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points, and a full-time load usually runs across two semesters or trimesters per year. The Diploma of Leadership and Management is delivered through a mix of core and elective units, so you can tilt your study toward the parts of management you need, operational planning, customer service, workplace safety or change management, depending on the electives on offer. There is no research thesis at diploma level. Some providers build in a work placement or a simulated workplace project as the final unit, which is where you pull everything together.
You learn to write an operational plan and then actually track it. To read a profit and loss statement well enough to ask the right questions. To run a team meeting that finishes on time with decisions made. To give feedback to someone whose work is slipping, without turning it into a fight. To manage your own workload and report upward. These are the tasks that show up in almost every supervisor and coordinator job advertisement in Australia, across retail, hospitality, logistics, health administration, community services and government.
This diploma fits people who are working and want a formal management qualification without committing to a three-year bachelor degree. It suits school leavers who want a faster route into a career, and it suits people with trade or front-line experience who are being asked to lead a team and want some structure behind it. If you are an international student, note that your Student visa normally allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available once you finish, depending on your circumstances. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. Check the official course page and the CRICOS register for current tuition, intake dates and exact entry requirements.
These roles appear in every Australian state and territory. The diploma also gives you credit toward further study, many graduates go on to a bachelor degree in business or management, and Australian institutions commonly grant credit for completed diploma units, which shortens the degree.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
