The Diploma of Business is a one-year qualification for people who want a grounding in how businesses operate, or a stepping stone into a bachelor degree. It sits at the diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree. You study core business areas, management, marketing, finance, and how organisations are structured, rather than specialising early. The exact unit list lives on the official course page; check it there before you apply.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually four units per semester, and the year is typically split into two or three study periods. At the end of the diploma you may be able to move into a bachelor degree and apply for credit for the units you have completed, which can shorten the degree. That arrangement depends on the receiving institution, so confirm it in writing before you enrol.
Assessment is a mix of exams, assignments, group work and presentations. Some providers include a work-integrated learning component, an internship or industry project, where local employers take students on placement. Whether this course includes one is set out on the official page; the same goes for any capstone unit that pulls the whole diploma together.
You come out able to read a profit and loss statement, put together a basic marketing plan, run a small team, and write a business report someone would actually read. Those are practical skills, and they are what employers ask about in interviews. The diploma also gives you the academic writing and referencing habits you need if you go on to further study.
School leavers who want a supported first year of tertiary study. People already working who want a formal qualification without committing to three years. International students who need to meet the English requirement for entry, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework at this level, and TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both.
On a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for the current figure, intake dates and campus details.
The diploma also gives you a route into a bachelor degree in business, commerce or management, usually with credit for the units you have passed.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
