The Advanced Diploma of Program Management at the Australia Institute of Business and Technology is a one-year qualification for people who coordinate multiple projects at once. You learn how to manage programmes rather than single projects, setting up governance, aligning projects with an organisation's strategic goals, managing benefits, and reporting to senior stakeholders. Units typically cover programme scope, time, cost and quality, along with risk, procurement, human resources and stakeholder engagement at the programme level. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can do the work, not just describe it.
An advanced diploma sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. It is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods rather than the semesters a university degree follows. You complete a set number of units of competency and accumulate credit points; each unit is assessed on its own and you need to be found competent in all of them to graduate. Some providers build in a work placement or simulated workplace project so you can demonstrate programme management tasks in a real or realistic setting. Check the official CRICOS entry and the institute's handbook for the exact unit list, study periods and any placement requirement.
You finish able to write a programme business case, map dependencies between projects, build and track a programme budget, run a benefits register, manage a risk plan across several workstreams, and lead project managers and support staff. Communication matters as much as the tools, you practise briefing steering committees, negotiating with suppliers, and handling competing priorities when projects slip. These are the skills employers ask for in programme and portfolio support roles.
This qualification suits people already working in project support or coordination who want to step up to programme-level responsibility, and career changers who need a practical, shorter qualification than a degree. It also works for team leaders who find themselves overseeing several projects and need formal recognition of what they already do. Because it is competency-based, it rewards students who can apply the material to their own workplace. International students should note that a Student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and that the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, subject to the Department of Home Affairs requirements. Confirm English, tuition and intake details on the official page before applying.
Graduates work across Australian industries that run many projects at once: construction and infrastructure, information technology and digital services, government and defence, banking and insurance, health services, and mining and resources. Employers include large corporates, consultancies, federal and state government agencies, and not-for-profits. Some roles sit inside a project management office; others are embedded in operational teams. Professional bodies such as the Australian Institute of Project Management recognise qualifications and experience for membership, so check their current requirements if that matters to you.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
