The Diploma of Community Services at Austin Institute of Trades is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You will study how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run case work, work within legal and ethical frameworks, and connect people to housing, income support, health and family services. The course covers community development, advocacy, group work, and the practical paperwork that goes with the job, case notes, referrals, incident reports and client files. You will also learn how to work safely with people in crisis, and how to look after your own wellbeing in a field where burnout is real.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value. At this level, a full-time load is usually around four units per semester, with two semesters a year. Some providers also run a trimester calendar. You need to complete all core and elective units to graduate, and the exact unit list, credit points and any prerequisites are set out in the official course structure. Confirm those details on the official page before you apply.
Work-integrated learning is a standard part of community services training in Australia. You should expect a supervised placement in a community organisation, a neighbourhood centre, family support service, homelessness service, aged care or disability provider, or a multicultural or Aboriginal community-controlled organisation. Placement hours are usually a set number, and you cannot graduate without them. The placement is where you put case planning, referral and client communication into practice under supervision, and it is often what gets you your first job.
By the end, you should be able to conduct an intake interview, develop a case plan with a client, make referrals, advocate for someone with a government agency or landlord, facilitate a group, and keep records that stand up to scrutiny. You will also learn to work within the Australian legal and policy setting, privacy, duty of care, mandatory reporting, and the National Disability Insurance Scheme and other funding frameworks that shape how services are delivered.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a practical, job-ready qualification rather than a three-year degree. It also suits mature-age students already working in care, disability, youth or aged services who want a formal qualification to move into case management or team leader roles. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. English requirements for social work courses are higher than the standard undergraduate level because you will be communicating with vulnerable clients and writing reports, check the published requirement for this course and confirm it on the official page.
These roles are found across Australia in the not-for-profit sector, state and local government, and private providers funded through the NDIS, aged care and other programs.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
