About this program

The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that prepares you to run the show in hotels, restaurants, resorts, events and food service operations. You study how a venue actually works: rostering and staffing, budgeting and cost control, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office, marketing, compliance with liquor and food safety law, and how to lead a team when the Saturday night rush hits. Assessment is practical as much as written, you plan menus, cost them, run service, handle complaints, and work through the numbers that decide whether a venue makes money.

Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. Most providers deliver them across two or three study periods a year, with a mix of classroom sessions, kitchen and service training, and supervised shifts. Because hospitality is a hands-on industry, your course will include work placement or industry experience, arranged by the institute or found with its help. You finish with a set of units that add up to the full qualification, not a single thesis or capstone. It sits below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework, but it is a full qualification in its own right and a common pathway into degree study with credit for what you have completed.

What you take away is operational confidence. You learn to write a roster that covers a public holiday, price a function, keep stock and wage costs in line, train new staff, and keep a venue compliant. You also learn the softer side: reading a room, dealing with a difficult customer, keeping a kitchen calm. Those skills travel, they are the same whether you end up in a city hotel, a regional pub or a catering company.

The course suits people who like working with people and want a management role without spending three or four years at university. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification with a strong practical focus. While you study, your Student visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight, which is a real advantage in an industry that hires around the clock. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may give you time to gain Australian work experience, depending on your circumstances. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for current unit lists, intake dates, placement arrangements and fees.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
