The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and develop, how to plan and run a curriculum that fits each child, how to keep them safe and well, and how to work with families and the wider community. The course sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it is practical, hands-on and focused on the job you will do.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over two semesters or three trimesters in a year, depending on the provider. You complete units of study, each with a set number of credit points. The units cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, working with families, and inclusion of children with additional needs. Most diplomas include a work placement component, where you spend time in a registered early childhood service under the supervision of an experienced educator. This placement is a core part of the qualification and lets you apply what you learn in a real setting.
You will learn to observe children and use those observations to plan experiences that support their learning. You will practise setting up indoor and outdoor environments that are safe and inviting. You will learn how to respond to children's behaviour in positive ways, how to work with families from different backgrounds, and how to follow the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework. You will also cover first aid, child protection, and workplace health and safety. By the end, you should be able to take responsibility for the care and education of a group of children and work as part of a team.
This diploma suits people who enjoy working with young children and want a qualification that leads directly to employment. It is also a good fit if you are already working in the sector and want to formalise your skills, or if you are changing careers. International students should check the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, though some providers ask for higher. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Always confirm the exact units, placement hours, English requirements and tuition on the official CRICOS register and with Aus Crest Pty Ltd before you apply.
These roles are in demand across Australia, in metropolitan and regional areas. The diploma also gives you a pathway to further study, such as a bachelor degree in early childhood education, which can lead to teaching registration and higher-level positions.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
