The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a hands-on qualification for people who want to work directly with young children in Australian early learning services. Over 1.5 years you study how children grow and learn from birth to five, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe and healthy, and how to work with families from all kinds of backgrounds. You also cover the legal side of the job: the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, child protection obligations, and workplace health and safety. Assessment is practical. You write observations of children, plan experiences, and reflect on what worked.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, between a certificate and a bachelor degree. This one is delivered over 1.5 years, typically across several study periods, and is made up of units of competency rather than the credit-point subjects you would see in a degree. Each unit covers a specific skill or knowledge area, and you need to be assessed as competent in all of them to graduate. There is no thesis at this level. Instead, the course includes a mandatory work placement in a regulated early childhood service, where you are supervised by qualified educators and assessed on the job. Placements are usually arranged by the provider and can be in long day care, preschool, or occasional care settings.
You finish with the practical skills employers ask for: setting up indoor and outdoor environments, guiding children's behaviour positively, supporting children with additional needs, communicating with families, and following service policies and legal requirements. You also learn to work within a team, keep records, and respond to incidents and emergencies. The diploma is recognised by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as a qualification for working as an educator in early childhood services, and it counts towards the staff-to-child ratio requirements in many settings.
This course suits people who enjoy working with young children and want to start working sooner rather than later. It is also a good fit if you are already working in the sector and want a formal qualification, or if you plan to go on to a bachelor degree later and want a pathway in. International students should check the official CRICOS page for the exact English requirement, tuition, and intake dates. As a student visa holder, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances.
These roles are found across Australia in privately run and community-based early learning centres, not-for-profit organisations, local council services, and school-based kindergartens. The diploma also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education if you want to become a teacher later.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).

Most subclass 500 refusals trace back to four things: the Genuine Student requirement, funds evidence, course-progression logic, or an incomplete CoE. Here's what each one actually means and how to fix it before you apply.
