The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to work in hotels, restaurants, resorts, clubs and event venues. It covers the day-to-day running of a hospitality business: rostering staff, managing stock and budgets, leading a team, and keeping customers happy. You study food and beverage service, front office operations, housekeeping, workplace health and safety, and how to handle complaints. Assessment is mostly hands-on, you might run a simulated service, cost a menu, or complete a shift in a training kitchen or restaurant. The course is delivered over 1.5 years, so it moves faster than a three-year bachelor degree.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. You enrol in a few units at a time, usually across semesters or trimesters, and each unit has its own assessment tasks. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, you build a portfolio of practical work and may finish with a capstone unit that pulls together everything you have learned, for example, planning and running an event or managing a simulated venue. Some providers include a work placement or industry internship as part of the course. If placement is included, it gives you real hours in a commercial kitchen, hotel or restaurant, which counts toward your qualification and your resume.
You learn to lead a shift, manage rosters and budgets, handle food safety, and deal with difficult customers. You also pick up the administrative side: stock control, supplier negotiations, and basic marketing. Communication matters, you will practise briefing a team, writing rosters, and reporting to a manager. By the end, you should be able to step into a supervisory role and keep a venue running smoothly during a busy service.
This diploma suits people who want a fast route into hospitality management without committing to a full degree. If you already work in a cafe or hotel and want to move into a supervisor or duty manager role, it gives you the formal qualification. It also works as a pathway: many students use a diploma to gain credit toward a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business. International students should check the CRICOS register for the published tuition and confirm English requirements, the Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, separate from the institute’s entry requirements. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Always check the official course page for the most current details.
These roles exist in every state and territory, from CBD hotels to tourism operators in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Many graduates also go on to run their own small hospitality business.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
