The Diploma of Community Services at ANE College is a practical qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run case work, and connect people with services such as housing, mental health, family support and emergency relief. The course covers community development, advocacy, legal and ethical requirements, cultural safety, and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You also study how organisations are run, because community services workers often coordinate programmes, manage small budgets and supervise volunteers.
This is a diploma at AQF level 5, delivered over 1.5 years. Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set number of credit points. You will complete a mix of core units and electives, usually spread across semesters or trimesters. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can do the tasks, not just recall facts. Many units include simulated workplace tasks, role plays and written assignments. Because community services is a hands-on field, your course will include a supervised vocational placement in a community organisation, where you work alongside paid staff and build a log of hours. That placement is a required part of the qualification and is how you practise intake interviews, case notes and referral before you graduate.
You finish with the ability to conduct client assessments, develop support plans, work within legal and ethical frameworks, communicate with people in crisis, and keep accurate records. You also learn to work in a team, handle conflict, and advocate for clients with government agencies and other services. The diploma teaches you to recognise when a situation is beyond your scope and refer on, a core skill in this sector.
This course suits people already working in community services who want a formal qualification, career changers who want to move into support work, and school leavers who want a direct path into the sector without a three-year degree. It also suits international students who meet the English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, though social work and similar fields often ask for 7.0–7.5. ANE College accepts TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and its own English programmes as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for current unit lists, placement arrangements and intake dates.
These roles are found in community health centres, women's refuges, homelessness services, disability organisations, aged care providers, youth services, family support agencies, and local government community services teams across Australia. The diploma also gives you a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in social work or community services, where you may receive credit for some units.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$19,200 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
