The Bachelor of Theology at Alphacrucis University College is a three-year degree for people who want to read the Bible closely, think through Christian doctrine, and understand how the church has grown and changed across history. You will study biblical languages, Old and New Testament texts, church history, systematic theology, ethics and pastoral practice. Units are taught in semesters, and you accumulate credit points across the degree. Most students take eight units a year, full-time. The course is delivered on campus in Sydney, with some units available online.
Core units cover the Pentateuch, the Gospels, Paul's letters, the history of Christianity from the early church to the present, and Christian beliefs about God, salvation and the church. You choose electives in areas such as youth ministry, chaplaincy, missions, worship, counselling and leadership. In your final year you complete a capstone project or research unit where you investigate a theological question in depth and write it up under supervision. Some students use this as a stepping stone to honours, which adds a fourth year and a research thesis.
The degree includes a professional placement or field education unit, usually in a church, school, hospital, aged care facility or community organisation. You work alongside a supervisor, reflect on what you observe, and connect it back to your theology units. This is where you find out what pastoral care, preaching, chaplaincy or ministry coordination actually feels like day to day. Alphacrucis has partnerships with churches and Christian organisations across Australia, and the placement office helps match you with a site.
This degree suits people preparing for pastoral ministry, chaplaincy, teaching in Christian schools, missionary work, or further study in theology. It also suits those who want to understand their faith more deeply without a specific vocational goal. If you are already working in a church or ministry role, the flexible delivery options let you study part-time while you keep working. International students should check the English requirements on the official page, since the standard for this course is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent. On a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Always confirm current entry requirements, unit offerings and fees on the official Alphacrucis page.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
