The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and it is built around the practical side of community work rather than theory for its own sake. You study how to assess a client's needs, plan and deliver support, work within legal and ethical boundaries, and connect people to services such as housing, income support, family services and mental health care. Case management, group work, advocacy and community development all come into it.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over two years of full-time study, split into semesters or trimesters. Each semester you enrol in a set of units of study, and each unit carries credit points. You need to pass the required number of units and accumulate the credit points set out in the course structure to graduate. Some units cover communication and legal frameworks; others focus on specific practice areas such as working with young people, families or people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Because this is a vocational qualification, a large part of your time goes into supervised work placement in a community organisation, where you practise what you have learned under the eye of an experienced worker. There is no research thesis at diploma level. The final stage is normally a placement or a workplace-based project that pulls your skills together.
You learn to interview and assess clients, write case notes and reports that stand up to scrutiny, and make referrals that actually help. You practise group facilitation, conflict resolution and advocacy. You also learn the boundaries of the job: when to escalate, what confidentiality means in practice, and how to work within the legal and policy frameworks that govern community services in Australia. By the end, you should be able to manage a caseload with supervision and contribute to community programs.
This diploma suits people who want to start working in the sector reasonably quickly, or who are already working in community services and want a recognised qualification. It also works as a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in social work or community development, with credit for the units you have completed. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Entry requirements, including English proficiency, are set by the provider and published on the official page, so check the CRICOS register and the institution's site for the exact details before you apply.
These roles are found across Australia in not-for-profit organisations, local councils, state government departments, community health centres, and family and youth services.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$46,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
