About this program
The Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a one-year qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil projects, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining walls, water and sewer reticulation. You learn to produce drawings and documentation that construction teams actually build from. That means plenty of time in CAD software, reading and interpreting survey data, working out levels and earthworks quantities, and understanding how a design moves from a client brief through council approval to a set of issued-for-construction drawings. You also cover the materials and structural basics that sit behind civil design, plus the codes and standards that apply in Australia.
How the course is structured
As a diploma, this sits at AQF level 5, below a bachelor degree and above a certificate IV. It runs for one year of full-time study, delivered across trimesters or semesters depending on intake. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all required units to graduate. Assessment is mostly practical: drawing submissions, design projects, calculations, and written reports rather than exams alone. Some providers build in a work placement or industry project, which is where you find out how a real drafting office runs and how a design team coordinates with engineers, surveyors and site staff.
Expect to spend a lot of time on software. You will produce 2D and 3D drawings, prepare plans and sections, and learn to set out a drawing sheet properly with title blocks, schedules and notes. Alongside that, you study civil construction principles: soil behaviour, drainage design, road geometry, concrete and steel detailing, and estimating quantities from drawings. The course also touches on project administration, how contracts work, how variations are managed, and how designs get revised when site conditions change.
Skills you come out with
By the end you should be able to take a design brief, do the calculations, draft the drawings, and check your own work against Australian standards. You will be comfortable with CAD, able to read engineering plans, and able to explain a design decision to a builder or a client. You will also have practice working to deadlines, which is what the job is.
Who it suits
This suits school leavers who want a practical, job-focused qualification without committing to a three-year degree, and it suits people already working in construction, site supervisors, tradespeople, estimators, who want to move into design or drafting. It is also a pathway: after the diploma you can apply for credit towards a bachelor degree in civil engineering or construction management, though how much credit you get depends on the receiving institution and the units you completed. International students should note the English requirement published by the provider, and that a Student visa carries work rights of up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. Graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, subject to the Department of Home Affairs criteria. Tuition is listed on the CRICOS register, check the official page for current fees, intakes and unit details.
