The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year Australian qualification for people who want to work with young children in long day care, kindergartens and preschools. You'll learn how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, observe and document children's learning, keep them safe, and work with families from many different backgrounds. Expect plenty of practical work: changing nappies, setting up activities, managing group routines, and learning how to respond when a child is hurt, upset or unwell. You'll also cover the legal side, child protection, workplace health and safety, inclusion and the National Quality Framework that every Australian early childhood service follows.
This is a diploma, not a degree. It sits below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework and is usually delivered over two or three study periods across a year, depending on whether the college runs semesters or trimesters. You'll study a set of units of study, each with a credit point value, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Many units include a work placement component, because you can't learn to work with children from a textbook. Placement hours are part of the course and are arranged by the college, so you'll spend time in a real early childhood service with a supervising educator. There's no research thesis at this level, that comes with a bachelor honours year or a master's degree.
You'll learn how to design and implement a curriculum that follows the Early Years Learning Framework, which is the national guide for what children from birth to five should experience. That means choosing experiences that build language, motor skills, social confidence and early numeracy. You'll practise writing observations and learning stories, the records educators keep to show a child's progress. You'll also learn how to work with colleagues, communicate with parents, and follow policies on everything from allergies to sun protection. By the end, you should be able to walk into a room and run it.
This diploma suits people who want to start working with children quickly rather than spend three or four years at university. It's also a pathway: many students use it to enter a bachelor degree in early childhood education with credit for some units, which shortens the degree. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is running, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia for a period. The college will confirm the exact visa rules and course details, check the official page and the CRICOS register for the current tuition and start dates.
These roles are found in the education and care sector, which includes private and community-run childcare centres, government-funded kindergartens, and not-for-profit organisations. Some graduates go on to study a bachelor degree and become early childhood teachers, which is a registered profession in Australia.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$13,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
