The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe, and how to work with families from many different backgrounds. The course also covers the legal side of the job: the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, child protection obligations, and workplace health and safety. You will spend time in real services, because this qualification is built around practical placement as well as classroom study.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. They are shorter and more hands-on than a bachelor degree, which normally takes three years, and they focus on job-ready skills rather than academic research. This diploma is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods depending on how the college structures its calendar. You complete a set number of units of study, each with credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, the final part of the course is a supervised professional placement in a registered early childhood service, where you put everything you have learned into practice under the guidance of qualified educators.
You will learn to observe children and document their learning, design experiences that match their interests and development, support children with additional needs, and communicate clearly with parents and colleagues. You will also practise the administrative side of the role: maintaining records, following policies and procedures, and contributing to quality improvement. The teaching mixes face-to-face classes, online learning and practical workshops, and assessment is through a combination of written tasks, projects and direct observation in the workplace.
This course suits people who enjoy working with young children and want a practical, relatively short path into the sector. It is also a good option if you are already working in early childhood and want to formalise your skills, or if you are changing careers and want to start in a role where demand for qualified staff is steady. International students should check the official CRICOS page and the college's website for the exact English requirement, tuition, intake dates and placement arrangements. The Student visa allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances.
These roles are found across Australia in privately run childcare centres, community-managed kindergartens, local government services and not-for-profit organisations. The early childhood sector is one of the largest employers in the country, and qualified educators are needed in cities and regional areas alike. Many graduates start as assistants and move into room leader or centre director roles after gaining experience. Some go on to study a bachelor degree in early childhood education, which can lead to teacher registration and higher duties.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
