The Associate Degree in Business Information Systems at AIH Higher Education is a two-year qualification for people who want to work where business needs meet technology. Over four semesters you study how organisations use information systems to run their operations, serve customers and make decisions. Core study covers business analysis, database design and management, systems development, project management, networking and the governance and security of organisational data. You also build a base in accounting, economics and management so you can talk to the business side of a project, not just the technical side.
As an associate degree, this sits at Level 6 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step below a bachelor degree. That means it is shorter and more applied than a three-year degree, but it is a recognised higher education qualification in its own right. Teaching is organised into units of study, each carrying credit points, delivered across semesters or trimesters. Assessment is a mix of exams, assignments, group projects and practical work, and many units include a team project where you scope, design or improve a system for a real or simulated organisation. If you later want to continue to a bachelor degree, you can usually apply for credit for units you have already passed, though the amount of credit is decided by the receiving institution. Check the official AIH Higher Education course page and the CRICOS register for the current structure, unit list and fees.
Skills you come out with are practical: gathering and documenting business requirements, modelling data, writing queries, testing systems, managing a small project and explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues. You learn to work in teams, present your thinking and use the tools that Australian employers actually run. The course suits school leavers who want a faster route into an IT or business role, career changers moving from administration or customer service into systems work, and people already in a workplace who need formal recognition of what they do. It also suits students who plan to use the associate degree as a stepping stone into a bachelor programme.
Studying in Australia means you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, which many students use to get local experience. Graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, subject to the Department of Home Affairs requirements in force at the time. International applicants need to meet the English requirement, and the Student visa has its own separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. Confirm entry requirements, fees, intake dates and credit arrangements directly with AIH Higher Education before you apply.
Australian industries that hire these roles include banking and financial services, insurance, health administration, retail and logistics, government, education, and the technology and consulting sectors. With further study, graduates often move into more senior analyst, project management or specialist roles.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$35,680 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
