The Master of Landscape Architecture at Adelaide University is a two-year professional degree for people who want to design outdoor spaces, parks, streetscapes, campuses, riverbanks, residential precincts, with an eye on ecology, climate and how people actually use a place. You'll study site analysis, planting design, water-sensitive urban design, landscape planning and the history and theory that sits behind the work. Studio units are the spine of the degree: you take a site, work through the constraints, and produce drawings, models and reports. You'll also cover construction and documentation, GIS and digital representation, and the planning frameworks that govern development in South Australia.
Australian master's degrees by coursework usually run over two years full time, split into semesters or trimesters. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need a certain total to graduate. The first year builds core design and technical skills. Later units go deeper into professional practice and a capstone design project or research thesis, where you tackle a real site or question and present your work to a panel. Some students spread the load over more than two years, and the university can tell you the part-time options.
Work-integrated learning is common in landscape architecture. Placements or industry-linked projects put you in a design office, a council, or a consultancy, working alongside registered landscape architects. That experience counts towards the practical hours you'll eventually need for professional recognition. The degree is recognised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), which is the body that accredits landscape architecture programmes in Australia. Accreditation matters if you want to become a Registered Landscape Architect later, check the current status with AILA and the university before you enrol.
You'll finish able to run a project from brief to built form: read a site, test ideas, resolve grading and drainage, choose plants that will survive the local climate, and write the documentation a contractor can build from. You'll learn to argue for a design in front of clients, community groups and planning authorities. Software skills, CAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modelling, are built into the studio units rather than taught separately.
This course suits graduates from landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, environmental design, horticulture or related fields who want to move into professional practice or specialise further. It also suits people already working in design or planning who need the accredited qualification to progress. Adelaide's setting, a compact city on the edge of a famous wine region, with the Murray-Darling Basin and significant coastal and arid landscapes within reach, gives you varied sites to study.
English proficiency is required for international applicants. The published standard for most coursework postgraduate programmes is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with equivalents accepted (TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, or the university's own English programmes). The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 115926J. Confirm entry requirements, fees and intake dates on the official page.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
