The Graduate Diploma in Visual Effects at Adelaide University is a one-year qualification for people who want to work in screen production, advertising, games or post-production. You learn the craft and the pipeline: compositing, digital matte painting, 3D asset creation, tracking and matchmoving, rotoscoping, lighting and rendering, and the shot-finishing work that turns a rough plate into a believable frame. Teaching happens in studios where you use the same software and file structures that Australian post houses run, and you build a reel across the year rather than sitting only written exams.
As a graduate diploma, this sits above a bachelor degree and below a master's on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is normally one year of full-time study, or part-time equivalent, delivered across semesters or trimesters. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, with core units in visual effects technique and a smaller number of electives. The final part of the year usually includes a capstone project, where you take a shot or short sequence from brief through to delivery and present it for assessment. Some students use that project as the centrepiece of a showreel for employers.
You finish able to plan a shot, break it into tasks, and work to a schedule with other artists. That means reading a brief, matching camera movement, integrating CG elements with live-action footage, managing colour and resolution, and handing files over cleanly. You also learn to take feedback from a supervisor and revise, the part of the job that takes most people time to get used to. Team-based production is common, so you practise the handover points between modelling, animation, effects and compositing.
It suits graduates from film, animation, design, fine art or computing who want to specialise, and people already working in screen or media who need formal training to move into effects. Adelaide has a screen production sector and the university's media and creative arts areas have links into it, so placement or industry project work is worth asking about when you apply. If you are an international student, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is the usual pathway to stay and work after you finish. Entry normally requires a bachelor degree or equivalent, and international applicants need to meet the English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 115885B. Check the official course page for the current unit list, intake dates and how to apply.
Employers include visual effects and post-production houses, film and television production companies, streaming content studios, advertising and design agencies, games studios, and in-house media teams in government and large organisations. Many roles are project-based, so a strong reel and a network of contacts matter as much as the qualification.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$21,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
