The Diploma of Digital Design at the Academy of Interactive Technology is a one-year qualification for people who want to make things, websites, interfaces, motion graphics, brand assets, and want to be employable at the end of it. You will spend most of your time in studios and computer labs, not lecture theatres. Expect to work through typography and layout, colour, digital image-making, interface and user-experience basics, and the software that studios actually use. Assessment is largely project-based: you build a portfolio across the year rather than sitting a final exam.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, one step below a bachelor degree. They are practical, competency-based qualifications, usually delivered over two or three study periods across a year. Each unit of study carries credit points, and if you later enrol in a bachelor degree, you may be able to apply for credit for units you have already completed, how much depends on the receiving institution and the grades you earn. Ask the course coordinator before you enrol if credit transfer matters to you.
Work-integrated learning is part of how design is taught in Australia. Depending on the delivery, you may complete a live client brief, an industry project, or a short placement with a studio or agency. This is where you learn to take feedback, work to a deadline, and present your thinking to someone who is not your teacher. Your final semester typically includes a capstone project where you develop a body of work from concept to finished outcome and present it to a panel.
This course suits school leavers who want a fast, practical entry into design rather than a three-year degree, career-changers moving into digital or graphic design, and people already working in marketing or communications who need production skills. International students should note that a Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English proficiency is required, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 086327K. Confirm entry requirements, start dates and fees on the official page before applying.
Australian employers in this field hire on portfolio first, qualification second. Build the strongest book of work you can while you study, and take every industry project or placement offered.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
