The Associate Degree in Digital Design at the Academy of Interactive Technology is a two-year qualification for people who want to work in graphic design, digital media and visual communication. You study design fundamentals, typography, layout, colour, image-making, brand identity and digital production, and build skills in the software the industry actually uses. Assessment is largely project-based, so you graduate with a portfolio rather than just a transcript.
Australian associate degrees sit at Level 6 of the Australian Qualifications Framework, between a diploma and a bachelor degree. They are usually two years of full-time study, delivered across semesters or trimesters. The structure is built from units of study, each carrying credit points. You complete core design units and choose electives, and most programmes finish with a capstone project where you develop a substantial piece of work from brief to final presentation. Work-integrated learning is common in design, internships, studio placements or live client projects, and gives you professional experience before you finish.
Skills you gain include visual research, concept development, digital illustration, web and interface design, motion graphics and print production. You also learn to present work to clients, take feedback and manage a project from start to finish. These are the skills employers ask for in studios, agencies and in-house teams.
The degree suits school leavers who want a practical, studio-based qualification, career changers moving into design, and people already working in creative roles who want formal recognition. It also provides a pathway into a bachelor degree with credit for prior study, depending on the receiving institution. English proficiency is required for international applicants, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for undergraduate and coursework postgraduate study, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm current entry requirements, unit lists and fees on the official page.
Australian industries that hire digital design graduates include advertising and marketing, film and television, publishing, software and technology, retail, and government communications. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia after completing their studies. While studying, international students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$42,400 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
