Be realistic about this first: Australia is a full-fee destination, and there is nothing here like a blanket tuition waiver. Most scholarship money reduces the fee rather than paying you to study. Knowing which category you actually fall into saves a lot of wasted applications.

Australia Awards, full funding, narrow eligibility

The Australian Government's flagship international scholarship, funded by DFAT as part of the aid programme. It is the only genuinely complete package: full tuition, return airfares, an establishment allowance, a contribution to living expenses, OSHC and an introductory academic programme.

The catch is eligibility. You must be a citizen of a participating partner country across the Indo-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East or Latin America, apply from outside Australia, and commit to returning home for at least two years after you finish. Application windows are set country by country, with most opening around February and closing in April or May.

The Research Training Program, how most PhDs are funded

If you want a research degree, this is the one that matters. The Commonwealth block-grants RTP funding to universities, which award it to their own PhD and research-master's candidates. An RTP award typically covers a tuition fee offset, an annual living stipend and allowances for relocation and thesis costs, and a defined share is available to international candidates.

You apply to the university, not to the government, and you cannot apply meaningfully without a supervisor and an accepted research proposal. Rounds commonly close between August and October for the following year.

Destination Australia, money for studying regionally

Up to A$15,000 per year to study at a regional Australian campus, from Certificate IV through to doctoral level, open to domestic and international students alike. Funding goes to participating providers who award it as named scholarships, so eligible campuses and courses vary.

Stack this against regional rents, which are dramatically lower than Sydney or Melbourne, and the total-cost difference is larger than most merit scholarships will ever deliver.

University merit awards, the largest category by volume

Every Australian university runs its own scholarships, and collectively these are where most students actually get money. Two things worth knowing:

  • Many are assessed automatically from your admission application, with no separate form. In those cases your admission application is your scholarship application, so it needs to be strong.
  • Others require a separate application with references and a personal statement, and close with the intake.

Most are partial tuition remissions rather than full packages. Check each shortlisted university's own scholarship search, and apply at the same time as admission, not after. Our scholarship directory lists the named national and university awards with eligibility and how each round works.

Discipline and research funders

  • NHMRC, health and medical research training, normally requiring Australian citizenship or permanent residency.
  • ARC, research across all disciplines except clinical medicine, supporting funded positions at universities.
  • CSIRO, co-supervises PhD projects with universities and pays a top-up on the university stipend, plus access to its facilities.
  • Rotary Peace Fellowships, a fully funded master's at the Rotary Peace Center hosted at the University of Queensland.
  • Australian-American Fulbright Commission, exchange in both directions between Australia and the United States.

What international students cannot get

A large amount of what you will read about "student funding in Australia" is domestic-only, and does not apply to you:

  • Commonwealth Supported Places, subsidised tuition for eligible domestic students
  • HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP, income-contingent government loans, domestic only
  • Youth Allowance and Austudy, income support, domestic only

If an agent tells you an international student can access HECS, that is not true.

How to actually win one

  • Read the selection criteria and answer them explicitly, in the order given.
  • Evidence claims with specifics, results, roles, dates, outcomes, not adjectives.
  • Apply at the same time as admission. Many awards close with the intake.
  • Apply to several. Merit awards at a mid-ranked university are far less contested than at a Go8.
  • Consider a regional campus, where the funding and the lower rent compound.

This guide is general information, not immigration or financial advice. Scholarship values, eligibility and closing dates are set by each funder and change every round. In Australia only a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner may give immigration assistance. Always confirm current fees, intakes and visa settings with the provider and at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before you act.
